DESTINATION: MOUNTAIN LAKE

From the Grauseeli to the Gelmersee

They say it’s about the journey, not the destination, but if you want a spectacular destination anyway, you’re in luck: many hikes in the Jungfrau Region end at a stunning mountain lake. Each one is more beautiful than the last.

UNESCO World Heritage

Hiking in the Jungfrau Aletsch UNESCO World Heritage Site

The Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of the most spectacular mountain landscapes in the Alps. The hike to the Oberhornsee features unique scenery and fascinating surroundings. The route winds gently uphill from Stechelberg and through the forest towards Trachsellauenen. But once you get to the Alpine hotel, it starts to get steeper. The next inn will come into view once you’ve gained 500 metres in elevation. Finally, the last leg from the Obersteinberg will take you over open country to the Oberhornsee. The view of the steep and partly icy north faces of the Grosshorn and Mittaghorn is stunningly beautiful.

From Goethe to Tolkien

Poems by Johan Wolfgang von Goethe and Lord Byron and a famous sketch by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy were all created in the Jungfrau Region. Even J.R.R. Tolkien, the author of “The Lord of the Rings”, drew inspiration from the Bernese Oberland when he was young. The Jungfrau Region also served as a template for a fictional landscape in Star Wars.
