Snowshoeing

Snowshoeing has been growing in popularity in recent years – especially among people who don’t want to miss out on hiking in winter. Originating in North America, snowshoes were once mainly used as equipment for working in snowy regions. These days, snowshoes are a popular piece of winter sports equipment. They help you move around in the snow and prevent you from sinking into it thanks to their large surface area.

SNOWSHOEING AND WINTER HIKING

Sulwald Trail

The trail begins behind the Sulwald-Stübli. Following the “Sulwald Rundweg” sign, the trail first follows a wide road until it branches off to the right and begins the ascent. After a leisurely initial ascent, you can continue uphill towards the Lobhornhütte. The Sulwald Trail turns right here and continues uphill through the snow-covered forest to a large clearing where the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau are practically at eye level. The descent from here is quick when wearing snowshoes. Once on the road, the trail leads back to the Sulwald-Stübli.

For experts and beginners

Always remember the following when walking uphill: as soon as it gets steeper, you should start using the heel lifters. They allow you to stand almost upright, which makes walking uphill much easier. To go downhill quickly with snowshoes, using a glissade or step-slide technique is recommended. To do this, lean back slightly and glide down with your knees slightly bent. You can increase your speed by leaning further back. But don’t worry, the Jungfrau Region has plenty of snow trails to suit all skill levels – for those with lots of snowshoeing experience and for first-timers.
